MU Players Surprise Visit

Students at Loreto High School had a day to remember on Wednesday 8th February, when two players from the Manchester United first team squad paid a surprise visit. Michael Carrick and Phil Jones visited Loreto and met with excited students including the talented year 8 football team, who were crowned the champions of Manchester last season. The premier league players described what it is like to play for Manchester United and they happily answered a range of questions presented by the enthusiastic students.  As well as playing football in the sports hall, the players visited  the MU Foundation classroom where they completed an exercise with students involving the creation of a football team based on animal skills. Difficult decisions had to be made such as, is the strength of an elephant  or the speed of a cheetah, superior to the height of a giraffe. Loreto Chorlton is one of twenty schools throughout Greater Manchester who have signed up to the Manchester United Foundation Partnership. The visit was part of the #SchoolsUnited initiative aimed at celebrating and showcasing the club’s extensive work in local communities and partner schools.

The visit attracted media attention from MUTV, the Manchester Evening News and the Daily Mirror which added to the excitement for the students involved. Headteacher Mrs Hughes commented, “We are thrilled to welcome Michael Carrick and Phil Jones to Loreto as part of the Manchester United Foundation provision. It means a great deal to hear the players encouraging our students to work hard and try their very best even when things are challenging.  Our students do work hard but it certainly helps to motivate them to reach for the stars, when they meet role models who are at the top end of their game”.
