On Thursday 17th May students and staff from Loreto Chorlton were delighted to welcome Sr Orla Treacy, the principal of Loreto Rumbek school based in South Sudan. Sr Orla, accompanied by Sr Kathryn and Sr Bernadette, visited classrooms and spoke to students about life in South Sudan for boys and girls and of the importance of providing education. The culture is very different in South Sudan and families often prefer their older children to stay at home to help the family with cooking or herding duties. Some families insist on their teenage daughters getting married in return for large dowries which create instant wealth for the families. Slowly the benefit of education is being understood but there is still work to do in terms of raising awareness. The Loreto students were curious to hear more about their international peers and some said how the talk made them appreciate their education a little more.
At the end of the visit, the Loreto Chorlton community presented Sr Orla with a cheque for £4,000 which had been raised through a series of fundraising activities. The two Loreto schools have promised to keep in regular contact and to exchange updates.
