47 musicians and singers had an amazing and memorable time on our biennial Loreto Concert Tour to Belgium, Holland and Germany from 6th-9th July 2018. We gathered together our Steel Pan groups, Year 8-11 bands, Folk Band and Jazz Band to perform concerts in Valkenburg, Holland and at Dreilandpunt, a tourist hotspot at the point where the three countries of Germany, Holland and Belgium meet. These were fantastic experiences and the audience loved our diverse range of music and were impressed by the students’ professionalism and talent.
As well as performing, we all had a wonderful time deepening our understanding of the local culture and experiencing some fantastic local experiences. On Saturday, we visited the underground cave experience in Valkenburg as well as the brilliant Agogo Toboggan run from the top of the hill which overlooks the town. We were welcomed here by the café-owner who kindly set up a TV for us to watch England’s World Cup Quarter-Final victory over Sweden and we ended the day with a delicious meal at Charlie’s Burgers restaurant.
On Sunday, we explored Hoensbroek Castle, a medieval moated castle with a dungeon and a Rapunzel tower! We also enjoyed the Labyrinth at the Three Countries Maze and later some down-time at the hotel’s swimming pool and at the Bowling Alley.
On our return journey, we enjoyed exploring the Belgian coastal resort of Ostend, the first venue for our Loreto Concert Tours back in 2012, and the students enjoyed shopping for Belgian Chocolate as well as a walk on the beach.
We are very proud of how the students represented our school abroad and lost count of the compliments we received from passers-by. Our coach drivers, Scott and Paddy, were fantastic and also commented on how polite and professional our students were. I would like to thank them for driving so safely and for their cheerful spirit at all times, and also thank the Loreto staff who worked so hard to keep the students safe and happy. And most of all, thank you to the students for their commitment, hard work and talent as well as their good manners when we were away. You are truly awesome!
