The Student Council organised Loreto’s second Diversity Day on 20th September. In keeping with our values, we celebrated Internationality. Pupils from Loreto speak 34 different languages, and Manchester is the most diverse city in Europe with over 200 languages being spoken. The day was led by two of our y9 Student Council members; Jessica Mellor and Jenesis Assis. They are part of the University of Manchester Diversity Project; which Loreto was chosen as one of 4 secondary schools across the city. Jess and Jenesis spent Y8 attending workshops about the importance of celebrating diversity, which culminated in a visit to Auschwitz in August.
Jess and Jenesis organised a range of visitors to deliver bespoke lessons to pupils, including the Peace Foundation, a Manchester United coach, the University of Manchester, Manchester Youth Council, a linguist, the Proud Trust. It was an incredible day in which Loreto pupils and primary pupils from Our Lady’s and St Johns enjoyed fun activities and thought provoking discussions. Could we get a quote from the Head at Our Lady’s or St Johns?
At lunch time all pupils enjoyed foods from around the world in the canteen, as well as information stalls on Hate Crime, diversity in sport and the importance of tolerance. The Student Council also organised and ran a cake sale which raised over £100 for our sister school in South Sudan.
