The CILIP Carnegie Medal is the UK’s oldest and most prestigious children’s book awards. Often described by authors and illustrators as ‘the one they want to win’ – the gold standard in children’s literature. 2017 is the 80th anniversary of the award. Each year reading groups across the UK challenge themselves to read all 8 of the nominated books between March and June and decide upon their winner.
A dedicated group of readers from Loreto are taking part by reading the books and meeting regularly to discuss their opinions and feelings around them. The books have sparked debate and curiosity and have led to wider discussions about reading for pleasure. The group are Maeve McGovern, Astrid Coles-Schott Lander, Katherine Coles-Schott Lander, Rosaleen Ahern, Ciara Marsh, Angela Lee and Ciara Avis.
