On 14th December the Year 10 football team played St Bede’s in the Catholic Cup and won the game with ease with a scoreline of 7 2 . Loreto started brightly and were soon 1-0 up with a well worked goal by Santiago Cortesao. Shortly after taking the lead, a lack of communication in defence allowed St Bedes to equalise with a well taken goal by their number 9. Loreto once again picked up the play and after a well worked passage of play between midfield partnership Sam Miller and Ousman Jallow, they released Anyvaldo Handenge who confidently slotted the ball into the corner of the net past the opposition goalkeeper. The score was 2-1 at half time.
It was all Loreto in the second half with Finn Hughes and Padraic Murphy stopping any threats from the St Bedes forwards and playing some fantastic passes through to midfield. One of these passes reached Guy Tulsie who controlled the ball on the edge of the area and was fouled from behind by the big central defender. Ousman Jallow stepped up and struck the ball with power and put the ball over the wall and into the top left corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance. Around the 50 minute mark, Santiago Cortesao scored 2 more goals in quick succession to secure his hat trick followed by a headed goal from Jallow to make the score 6-1. St Bede’s didn’t give up and got a consolation goal near the end from a rare mistake at the back from Loreto. The final action of the game saw Loreto extend their lead once again as Santiago secured his 4th after a sublime interchange with Eddie Goddard. The impressive final score was 7-2 and the Year 10 team will now await their new opponents in the next round of the Catholic Cup.
