45 musicians and singers from Year 8-11 travelled to the Mosel valley in Germany on 1st July for our biennial Music Tour abroad. We had long coach journeys but passed the time doing a quiz, watching DVDs and practising our German thanks to the help sheet made by Frau Hughes! We stayed in a beautiful town on the banks of the River Mosel called Cochem with its very own castle which we visited on Saturday morning. After a beautiful boat trip enjoying the spectacular scenery with vineyards, castles and chocolate-box villages in all directions, we performed a superb concert in stunning Kurhaus hotel concert hall in the village of Bad Bertrich where we received a commemorative personalised picture. In the evening, students enjoyed the facilities at the hostel, playing football and table tennis an some even dared to watch the Germany Euro 2016 match with the local Germans! Great fun!
On Sunday, we travelled to the city of Koblenz and enjoyed an exciting cable car trip across the Rhine up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress followed by some free time exploring and shopping. In the afternoon, we had a sightseeing tour of the ancient town of Boppard on a land train! After setting up at Boppard bandstand in the rain for our concert, the sun came out as soon as the Jazz Band started to play and the fantastic music of the Loreto performers drew a crowd of locals and tourists numbering about 150!! Jazz Band, Irish Band, Steel Pans and all our rock, pop and soul bands from Years 8-11 wowed the crowds and most of the audience stayed for the full 90 minute concert! Many were dancing and it was enjoyed and appreciated by all. In the evening, the students enjoyed relaxed with a game of mini-golf followed by pizza and ice-cream in the prettiest and oldest restaurant in Boppard. Many ordered their ice-cream in German and the staff all commented on how polite and well-behaved our students were.
Our Loreto musicians were an absolute credit to the school in every way – not only their musicianship but their kindness, politeness and enthusiasm was noted by all who met them. We are very proud of them all.
