Year 7 Curriculum Outline

The curriculum at Loreto High School is designed to develop the talents of each individual student. We believe that each student is a unique individual formed in the image of God and that nothing but the very best curriculum should be provided for them.
This means that our curriculum needs to:
- Respond to the changing needs of the individual and of society
- Be inclusive to people with different abilities
- Be aspirational so that all students can achieve more than they thought possible
- Take account of the whole person so that each child grows as an individual and develops the freedom to become their best self
- Have an ethical dimension, teaching students how to be sincere and truthful doers of justice, committed to building a better world
- Fill students with the joy of learning
In Year 7, students are taught in form groups for most subjects except for Design Technology where the forms are mixed to form smaller classes and Physical Education where they are mixed to produce separate boys and girls classes. They study the full national curriculum which includes French and Spanish for most students. The provision of a Year 7 Teacher for each class, and two teachers for many subjects, ensures that the curriculum is tailored to the individual child, with individual and small group tuition provided when required. Having one teacher responsible for the child also means that we get to know them very well, develop their study techniques and transfer learning across different areas of the curriculum.
All students are issued with target levels in the Autumn term in Year 7. These are based on the Year 6 SATS and Teacher Assessments in English, mathematics and science as well as the initial assessment taken at the end of the first half term at Loreto. The targets are designed to ensure that students make at least three levels progress in their time at Loreto and that many make more progress than this. Their progress is monitored at the end of each half term by Heads of Department, Heads of Year and senior teachers, and interim reports are sent home at these times.
The school operates a two week timetable cycle with five one hour lessons in each day. Each day begins with a twenty minute tutorial session where the students reflect on their learning, join in with prayers and chaplaincy activities and get organised for their home study.
Students are set homework tasks each day according to the homework timetable contained within this booklet. The additional study set each day really helps students to consolidate their learning and we are grateful for the support given by parents and carers in ensuring that this is completed on time and to a high standard.
