Year 10 Curriculum Overview

“See all of the different persons as we are all on the same earth but we require different directions.” Mary Ward

The curriculum at Loreto High School is designed to develop the talents of each individual student. We believe that each student is a unique individual formed in the image of God and that nothing but the very best curriculum should be provided for them.

This means that our curriculum needs to:

• Respond to the changing needs of the individual and of society
• Be inclusive to people with different abilities
• Be aspirational so that all students can achieve more than they thought possible
• Take account of the whole person so that each child grows as an individual and develops the freedom to become their best self
• Have an ethical dimension, teaching students how to be sincere and truthful doers of justice, committed to building a better world
• Fill students with the joy of learning

In Year 10, students are grouped separately for English, Mathematics and Science and are taught with students who are working towards a similar target level. ICT and RE follow the English groupings while in PE boys and girls are taught in separate classes. Students study up to four optional subjects in addition to the core curriculum.

All students are issued with target levels in the autumn term. These are based on the Year 6 and Year 9 SATS and Teacher Assessments in English, Mathematics and Science. In all other subjects they are based on the initial assessment taken in Year 7 and their final assessment in Year 9. The targets are designed to ensure that students make at least three levels progress in their time at Loreto and that many make even more progress than this. Their progress is monitored at the end of each half term by Heads of Department, Heads of Year and senior teachers who plan intervention strategies for those who are underachieving. Interim reports are also sent home at these times.

The school operates a two week timetable cycle with five one hour lessons in each day. Each day begins with a twenty minute tutorial session where the students reflect on their learning, join in with prayers and chaplaincy activities and get organised for their homework.

Students are set homework tasks each day according to the homework timetable included in this booklet. The additional study set each day really helps students to consolidate their learning and we are grateful for the support given by parents and carers in ensuring that this is completed on time. Given that students are now studying for their GCSE and BTEC examinations, they should be doing independent study and revision in addition to their usual homework. Subject teachers can give guidance on this upon request. All homework is recorded on the “Showmyhomework.com” website and parents have their own log on details for this. Please contact the school office if you need to check your details or require support in accessing this website.
